Act I
In a very distant country, in western extremity of Europe, named Portugal, lived a very happy swarm in their hive. It was just like any other swarm: bees were always working so that nothing was missing at home. There was, however, a bee that spent her time staring at the sky and dreaming…
One day, the Queen Bee, unhappy and worried, interrupted her dream.
Queen Bee- (angry) Why aren’t you working? Why are you missing school? So, today you won’t say ’What a wonderful day?’ Look around you! All the bees have got an assignment. Are you willing to damage the balance of the hive?
Beezy – (staring at the sky, dreaming look on her face) I am tired of doing the same things, day in day out. I want to travel. (straightening her sunglasses)
Queen Bee – WHAT!?!?!?!
Beezy – I want to travel! I want to find out the world outside this hive and this country.
Queen Bee – (holding her hand) I know you are different from the others. You are curious, creative, always dreaming … but a trip! That’s insane! You’re just a bee!
Beezy– A small bee, of course, but with a great will, an enormous dream…
Queen Bee– (curious) Where do you plan to travel? Do you think you are able to find a prettier place than this? (looking around them) Green fields, lots of flowers, a blue sky, an endless sea…
Beezy – I want to travel with no destination!
Queen Bee – ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?! The world is very dangerous!
Beezy – (intrigued) Dangerous??!?!?
Queen Bee – (sadly) Yes, very dangerous. Men are only interested in their well-being and money.
Beezy – Is that dangerous?!
Queen Bee- Much more than you can imagine.
Beezy– (intrigued) But how?
Queen Bee- They lay down trees, pollute the atmosphere, the rivers and the sea… they cause fires, instead of forests they have buildings, roads, shopping centers and factories. They are damaging the balance of the planet, exhausting its resources.
Beezy – Do you believe they will hurt me too?
Queen Bee – (grabbing her by the shoulders and smiling) You are very absent minded, so you are forgiven! They will hurt all of us, not just you.
Beezy – (scared) All of us?!?!?!
Queen Bee – Yes, all of us! How do you think we can live without trees and flowers?
Beezy– (astonished) I never thought about that!
Queen Bee – Well, lots of swarms have been already disappearing, day by day…
Beezy – (interrupting the queen) But that’s a tragedy!!!! A catastrophe!!!
Queen Bee – Yes, my dear Beezy! And you still want to travel? (with a very sad voice) You know … it’s time for you to know the truth. Your father travelled. He also wanted to know the world and find the dangers that we are subjected to. But, he didn’t come back from one of those journeys… (wiping the tears).
Beezy – ((intrigued) My dad?!?!?!?! Was my dad a hero? Did he disappear defending our ideals? (with her mind made up) I WANT TO BE LIKE HIM! More than ever, I need to make this journey! I have to warn all the bees about the dangers out there. I have to do something! I have to change the world!
Queen Bee – (worried and scared) What are you going to do? Where are you going?
Beezy – I still don’t know but tomorrow… (opens her handbag and takes out a world map) I am leaving to …
BzzzzBzzzz BzzzzBzzzz (a message arrives through the antennae of the Queen Bee)
Queen Bee – (in despair) OH, NO! Oh, no…
Beezy- What is it? What’s wrong?
Queen Bee – (very sad) A friend of mine, in a foreign country needs help. She is having serious problems with the pollen levels. It’s going to be a disaster!
Beezy – (agitated) A friend? A disaster? Where?
Queen Bee – A friend that I met in an international meeting about the importance of the hives. She is the queen of a swarm in Bulgaria.
Beezy– (with her mind made up) That’s where I am going!!
Queen Bee – Wait!... You are not going alone!...
